Should Missions Have A Personal Mission Statement

This past few years I have seen a trend where stakes, wards, and missions have developed mission statements.  I am not sure the extent that they go to to solicit stakeholders input.  Most have a top down approach.  It is harder to get missionaries or leaders to buy in to a mission statement that they had little involvement in formulating.  The fact that there are few stakes, wards, or even missions with individual mission statements is interesting in and of itself.  I wonder if it takes a business or educational mindset to buy in to the process.

The MTC Cereal Challange

Elder Russell Maxwell Trying to Break MTC Cereal Eating Record
Every now and then I come across a zany missionary ritual.  The MTC is full of them including the MTC Cereal Challenge.  From time to time there have been an elder or two who has incredibly eaten over one hundred bowls of cereal.  I don't know the final tally of how many this elder actually ate but I bet it was quite a few.   It is hard to imagine what drives them to such gluttony but it helps relieve the stress when you have an all you can eat type of food experience. Even if he only ate one it must keep the dishwashers busy cleaning them. It is not hard to believe that occasionally an elder or sister might eat a prodigious amount of food.  I bet the sisters prefer having ice cream eating contests rather than cereal ones.

The Defenders of Zion Mission

The motto of our mission is that we are Defenders of Zion,
Zion being the pure in heart.

Do you know which mission is called the Defenders of Zion Mission?

I didn't until I read the blog of the new mission president of the Utah Salt Lake City mission Bruce Winn.  According to his wife Nancy he has taken to singing the hymn Awake Ye Defender's of Zion in the shower constantly.

10/10/10 Program: Canada Toronto West Mission Implements New Program

Elder M. Russell Ballard with two new mission presidents Bradley Brower (left) and Len Greer (riight) both who served in CTM June 2010
Elder Macaulay Wilson, a missionary serving in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada shares with us a new 10/10/10 program implemented by his new mission President Brad Brower in the Canada Toronto West Mission:

Zone conference was great. I really like my zone and everything and it was cool getting to know President Brower a little more along with his wife. He has a pretty energetic personality so it's kind of cool to see him in action. According to Elder Blaisdell, he's a lot different from the previous mission president, President Middleton. President Middleton had a more reserved kind of a personality. But I guess there's kind of a cool story I can tell you about him, or about a challenge he gave us. He called it the 10/10/10: the first 10 means talking to someone within the first ten minutes that you leave the door, the next 10 means talk to 10 people outside or your planned finding activities for the day, and the last 10 means present the Book of Mormon to ten people throughout the day. It's pretty cool seeing how well it works and how the Lord truly does bless missionaries as they try to carry out this challenge/goal. Whenever we walk outside onto our not-very-busy street, there's always one person just walking around or hanging out in their front yard that we can talk to. They don't usually ever listen to what we say, but at least we are able to get the goal in for the day and have the Spirit with us that much more. Usually after we walk by that person we don't see anyone else out on the street for another half hour or so because there's not usually people out that early in the morning. Pretty cool seeing the Lord's hand at work like that every day.

It is always interesting to see what programs that mission presidents try in their missions.

M. Russell Ballard's Son-in-Law Brad Brower Stokes Up Missionaries in Canada Toronto West Mission

President and Sister Bradley James and Tamara Ballard Brower
I see that my old friend Brad Brower and his wife Tamara Ballard Brower are pumping up the missionaries in the Canada Toronto West Mission.  He is a chip off the old block returning to our old mission field and getting the missionaries cranked up like his father-in-law and former mission president Elder M. Russell Ballard.  Elder Ballard used to do the same thing saying that he would wind us up and then we would be good for the six weeks between zone conferences.  He trained Elder Brower and his daughter Tammie well. Now the missionaries have to be wound up longer as zone conferences are changed to every three months.  Brad Brower has always been an impressive person so I am sure he will have success at keeping his missionaries all stoked up.  One of his missionaries shares how motivational he is.

Scooter Tracting in the Taiwan Taipei Mission Reaps Baptisms

Sister Flora Bruno on her trusty bike
My daughter Flora (Fui Jimei) who served a mission in the Taiwan Taipei Mission reported on 1 August 2010 to the High Council of the Charleston South Carolina Stake about her missionary experiences in Taiwan.  One of the best ways she talked about getting investigators was to ride up on her bike to people who were stopped on their scooters. The missionaries would then invite them to church or asking them if they could come over and talk with them.  Many people are baptized in Taiwan and other places in Asia this way.  Most missionaries have Chinese names since the Taiwanese can't pronounce their American names.

What Is A Mini-Missionary

Elder Matthew Schneider serving down in Argentina shares with us his definition of what a mini-missionary is:

So... I lost my companion. He left last night for Resistencia. So... I lost my hijo/newbie. It kind of makes me sad. To explain a little bit, he went to Resistencia because they called him to be the new Secretary of Materials. I´ve got a little bit of pride in that, because well, he´s the youngest elder ever to go to the office. :) :) But, it also means that I will be with a mini-missionary for the next two weeks until the transfer ends. It also means that without a doubt I will be in this area until the end of August. For those who are unfamiliar with the idea of a mini-missionary, it's a member that they assign to go and be with the missionary for a certain time period when there is a shortage of elders. The only good thing is that I know he is a member from my first area.
I really enjoy learning new missionary terms. I did a post last year on Missionary Lingo.

Philippines MTC: An Inside Photographic View

Architectural Rendition Expansion Philippines MTC
I have been trying to find pictures of all the various MTCs. Kelly Mills provides a few pictures in a recent post plus a description of the renovation and expansion he is working on. It is kind of cool to find this hard to find pictures and description. In a post entitled Visit to the MTC Kelly provides us with a few photographs of what the current Philippines MTC looks like as well as an architectural rendition of what it will look like after expansion and renovation.  Kelly shares a few experiences about missionaries who went there to humanize the account. Check out the family blog Keeping Track of the Mills Family.

Multiple Missionaries How Common Is It?: The Denton Missionaries and The Papritz Army Family with Four Missionaries

Connie Denton
Last week I posted on the Gonzales missionaries who have three missionaries out.  I really love the upbeat personality of Amy G she makes some good comments on my blog from time to time. I thought that three missionaries was a lot of missionaries and that there couldn't be more than a handful families with that many.  But this week I discovered that there are families with as many or even more missionaries out.

Out of the Mouth of Babes: Missionary Shares Financial Reasons for Mission Reductions

I fell across the blog of Chris Christiansen, a missionary in the Australia South Mission, who was apparently told by his mission president what  Dennis Simmons thought were the reasons for the mission reductions that occurred on 1 July 2010.  I don't believe any missionary could come up with these reasons on their own. Elder Christiansen wrote:

Big news. The Sydney south is no longer going to be a mission as of July 1st. The North and South are combining into one like the olden days! Pres. Simmons and will still be president. Pray for him and Sister simmons. They are going from about 100 missionaries to look after to 200. The south area takes about 8 hours to drive from top to bottom and will now take them 24. WOW.

They are combining it for cost reasons and for effectiveness reasons. There are less missionaries going out so they are sending more missionaries to places like South America where the people are really ready for the gospel and pulling out of areas that are drying up. It cost 1.2 million a year to keep the south open, apparently the $10,000 I earned for my mission only covers 2/5 of what it costs to keep me here.

I always suspected that by downsizing the amount of total missions the church could save a lot of money running in to the millions.  I also realize that it cost a lot more to keep missionaries out than what they are paying in to be on a mission.  I also suspect that the decline in missionaries would cause the church to redistribute them to where they could be more effective. This is a fascinating post.

Lladro Missionaries Figurine: Spain Barcelona Mission

I discovered an interesting blog the Spain Barcelona Mission.  President Gordon B. Hinckley's son Clark Bryant Hinckley and his daughter-in-law Kathleen Hansen Hinckley are serving as the Mission President and wife there.  I spent a couple of hours reading the blog and found it contained some interesting things.

Kathleen described a visit to the Lladro Outlet right before Christmas in 2009  and turned me on to this interesting and very expensive porcelain figurine by the Lladro Brothers

Changes in Missionary Meetings

Elder and Sister D. Todd Christofferson with President and Sister Dowdle
President Michael Dowdle of the Micronesia Guam Mission reported beginning on 1 July 2010 the following changes:

The church has announced changes in missions world wide. We will be having zone conferences with our missionaries once a quarter instead of once a transfer. President's interviews will be once a quarter as well. We will have two new meetings. "Leadership Training" will be held every other month and "Specialized Training" will be held every month. This will give us more opportunity do the work with our missionaries in their companionships. We are excited for that. More finding, teaching, etc...Just when you think you knew the schedule!!!

Special Mission Ties: Ghana Cape Coast Mission Tie

Elder Mackay-Elder Lehr-Elder Evans (Las Vegas Elders serving in Cape Coast Mission)

Different missions throughout the world have different forms of recognition.  Some missions have special coins, pins, mascots, and slogans.  Others have special ties.  The Ghana Cape Coast Mission has this sharp looking tie that the missionaries put on for special occasions like zone or mission-wide conferences.  I wonder how many missions have a special tie.

The Adventures of Sister Annika Kamaleilani Bruno

My fourth daughter Annika Kamaleilani Bruno received her mission call this week to the Phillipines Cebu Mission. She was very excited to receive her call to a foreign-speaking mission.  Having spent the last school year at BYU-Hawaii Annika has a love for the Polynesian people. None of us were able to guess that she would be called to the Phillipines.  Even though much of the Phillipines speak Tagalog this island province speaks Cebuano so she will be learning a very regional dialect at the MTC.  Annika is to report to the MTC on Wednesday, October 6,2010.  The Adventures of Sister Annika Kamaleilani Bruno will record her thoughts, and experiences while serving her mission.
